Greenbrier, Tennessee - Following many very difficult years battling addiction and internal demons, Matthew Kristian Eggleston said goodbye to the world... and his battles. He took his own life on 11/28/2025.
Matt was born 12/16/1971 in Fargo, N.D. to Ann Marie (VanKirk) and Rodney Elroy Eggleston. He was welcomed by his brother Mark and would be joined by younger brother Joshua a few years later.
From Fargo, the family followed (dad) Rod's career moves to Chicago and Memphis. Matt was a stellar athlete playing baseball, football, hockey and golf. A sports freak; he was often "too smart" for his own good. He graduated from Memphis Ridgeway High School and went on to graduate from "Ole Miss" in 1994 and received his law degree in 1997 from Memphis University Cecil Humphry's School of Law.
Matt Practiced law in Memphis as a public defender and ultimately Nashville, where he worked for the Tennessee Drug Interdiction Program until his death. His passion to "reach out," lend a hand and share his gifts of compassion, humor and genuine selflessness are traits his friends and family will desperately miss.
He is preceded in death by his mother Ann in 2020. He is survived by his daughter Chloe Eggleston of Colorado, father Rod (Jeryl) Burnsville, MN, brothers Mark (Dina) Charlotte, NC and Joshua (Melissa) Durham, NC, and many nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He will also be missed by Laura McClendon and sons A.J. and Miles; Ridgetop and Nashville TN.
A memorial service will be held at Legacy Golf Course in Springfield, TN in the near future. Matt's many golf buds were also "family" and dedicated to helping whenever and wherever needed. Special thanks to Todd and Misty Williamson and Matt and Nicole Hillis and his "Springfield Family" that he wrote of in a tribute to all of his extended family on Thanksgiving Day.
Matthew will be buried near his grandparents and his mother in the family plot at Calvary Cemetery in Rochester, Minnesota in the Spring of 2026.
Our memories are rich and real because of Matthew's presence and we are all grateful for the time we were able to share.
Always faithful, rest in peace my son. "We will forever be known by the tracks we leave behind us"......Dakota saying.
