Springfield, Tennessee - Sandra Jacqueline Juarice Stone Sherrod passed away peacefully at her home in Springfield on Friday, October 31, 2025. Sandra, or "Weesie" as she was affectionately called, was heaven sent on August 2, 1947, in Springfield. The second daughter born to the late Ms. Dorothy Dunlap and the only child born to her beloved father, the late Mr. Johnny Stone. Her only sister, Evangelist Andrea Darnell Satchell also preceded her in death.
Sandra accepted Christ at an early age uniting with the Church of God Leota Street (Springfield) and was very active on the Local, District and National levels of the church. To name a few, at a young age, at Leota Street, she sang with the Youth Choir assisted in the kitchen at District and National Conventions, later progressing to teaching Vacation Bible School. At Meharry Boulevard, she spearheaded several Summer Retreats, taught Sunday School, at Stokers Lane she served in other capacities as needed for as long as her health allowed. Sandra loved her Church and its leaders, making lifelong friendships while cementing her love for God and people. Sandra also loved her community, working untiringly alongside her husband (who was then president of the Springfield Chapter of the NAACP), working with the Bransford High School Alumni Association, and formerly serving on the Board of the Bransford Community Center where she coordinated a fundraising program called "A Look Back" spotlighting Ms. Lena Bransford, Mr. John Patterson and other Bransford High School educators who were prominent in the education of many students in Springfield/Robertson County.
Sandra was a diligent student who always excelled academically. A proud graduate of the Bransford High School Class of 1965 (Springfield), Sandra continued her love for learning by attending Tennessee State University (Nashville). Following a brief interruption (marriage to the late Mr. Kenneth Lee Sherrod, the birth of her sons, William Kendall, Jermaine Vershaun, and Gary Van). After a few years working at a job that was unfulfilling and with the unwavering support of her husband and sons, ever determined, Sandra returned to her love of learning and excelling by enrolling in the University of Tennessee (Nashville Campus) where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education.
After briefly working as a counselor for the State of Tennessee's Department of Human Services (Springfield), Sandra secured her first teaching job at White House Elementary School (White House, TN) and eventually retiring from Robert F. Woodall Elementary School also in White House after over 30 years of helping to shape the minds of kindergarteners and first graders. She was a member of the Robertson County Educators Association (RCEA), TEA and NEA and received several awards.
Her marriage of 52 years to Kenneth (who spoiled her immensely before preceding her in death) was something to witness - their home was always open, filled with love and food and where family and many friends gathered every holiday or just because. They were the "Carl & Harriett" (Winslow) of the Sherrod family (much laughter and many quips)! Among the many things Sandra will be remembered for are her kind heart, unwavering faith, welcoming spirit, willingness to help and share with others, her hot water cornbread, turnip greens and iced tea-all of which she consumed very little-if any and last but certainly not least, her love for her family and friends.
Forever cherishing her memory are her sons, William Kendall and Gary Van; her grandchildren: "Granny" to Shanika/Neek (Joshua) Watkins and "Granny Girl" to Elijah/Eli "Doodle Bug" Sherrod; sisters-in-law, Carolyn (Herring) Sherrod, Dr. Brenda (Ted) Jamison, and Paulette (Michael) Adams; her many cousins: the Stones of Springfield, the Bowers of Nashville, the Bentons of Russellville, KY; Vicky (Harold) Barbee and Terry Austin (Springfield); Freddie (Sandra) Austin and Diane Austin (GA); nieces, nephews, cousins, cousins-in-law; her dear and special cousin/sister Mrs. Joan (Bowers) Baker; her dear and loving friends Ms. Angela Shelton, Sister Betty Gordon and Sister Sheila Batts. Special mention: adopted sons, Eric Herring and Orlando Payne, and other friends of Kendall's and Gary's; devoted neighbor Rita Bowens, dutiful friend Angela (Hilliard) Richards; special classmates Mr. Steverson Hyde, William Trotter, Herbert Goodner, Charles Northington, Ms. Irene Holman, Ms. Helen Nixon: and special coworkers: Tequita Easton, Lyn Dorris, Betty Anderson and Elizabeth Carlson.
